Akiva builds competence in Hebrew reading, speaking, understanding and writing through a sequential series of contemporary books geared to teens. Each book focuses on a compelling theme like friendship, sports, computers or freedom, and each incorporates Jewish tradition and modern Israeli culture. Depending on the level of the student, he/she progresses through three books a year - completing a written or oral assessment after each one.
The Akiva curriculum, called NETA, is used in close to 100 Jewish day schools nationwide for middle school and high school students. Akiva is one of a handful of supplementary schools taking advantage of the program. Developed by education specialists at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and administered by Hebrew College in Boston, NETA provides teachers with intensive training over the summer and continuing training and mentoring throughout the school year. (More information about the acclaimed program is available at www.netahebrew.org).
